The Burtas were Turkish tribal folk who lived in tents just north of the Caspian Sea, maintaining a somewhat nomadic existence according to the requirements of seasonal grazing on the steppes.

Torkils were another Khazar tributary tribe very similar to the Burtas, and located so as to be a buffer against the Pechenegs.
