Photograph of aviators George Haldeman (R) and Shirley Short at Mines Field (later Los Angeles International Airport) after a transcontinental race from New York to Los Angeles, in front of a Bellanca CH-300 plane.
The photograph is related to the articles: "Throngs Cheer Vikings of Air," Los Angeles Times, 15 Sep. 1928: A1 and "Twin Fates Defeat Pilots: George Haldeman Forced to Stop in New Mexico for Oil While Goebel Needed Gasoline," Los Angeles Times, 15 Sep. 1928: A1. George Haldeman was an American aviator, who in 1928 participated in a transcontinental race from New York to Los Angeles. He was forced to land for oil in New Mexico. The end point of the air race George Haldeman participated in was Mines Field in Los Angeles. Mines Field would soon become what is now Los Angeles International Airport.
