Deutsch: Das Wappen verweist auf den Übergang der Stadt 1353 an Friedrich den Strengen, Markgraf von Meißen, den ersten wettinischen Landesherrn. Es wurde 1962 erneut eingeführt, nachdem zwischenzeitlich vom 19. Jahrhundert an ein einschwänziger Löwe im Wappen gezeigt wurde.
English: The arms show the Lion of Meißen. It was the coat of arms of the medieval Margraviate of Meissen and can be found in and around Saxony. The arms were derived from a seal from the 17. century; from 19. century till 1962 the lions had only one tail.
