English: Every year in Switzerland between May and July, hundreds if not thousands of fawns are horribly mutilated or killed by farm machinery. Female roe deer give birth to fawns in tall grass used for farming. When an agricultural machine approaches, the fawn (undetectable by the farmer) does not have the reflex to leave, remains on the spot and meets a certain death or is severely crippled. The foundation Sauvetage Faons Vaud calls on volunteers who use drones equipped with thermal imaging cameras to fly over agricultural plots early in the morning (between 4am and 8am) in order to detect the presence of fawns and place them under a wooden crate until the farmer has finished mowing. This baby fawn, probably between one and three days old, would have met a certain death if it had not been rescued. This photograph was taken once the crate had been removed after the field had been mown. The young animal's mother waited on the edge of the forest for the farm machinery to finish before returning back to nurse her baby.
Français : Chaque année en Suisse de mai à juillet, des centaines si ce n’est des milliers de faons (en moyenne environ 1500 par an) sont atrocement mutilés ou tués par des machines agricoles. Les chevrettes (femelle du chevreuil) accouchent de faons dans des hautes herbes utilisées par l’agriculture. Lorsqu’une machine agricole approche, le faon (non détectable par le paysan) n’a pas le réflexe de partir, reste sur place et connait une mort certaine ou est sévèrement estropié. La fondation Sauvetage Faons Vaud fait appel à des bénévoles qui utilisent des drones munis de caméras thermiques afin de survoler les parcelles agricoles tôt le matin (entre 4h et 8h) en vue de détecter la présence de faons et les placer à l’abri sous un cageot en bois jusqu’à ce que le paysan ait fini de faucher. Ce bébé faon vraisemblablement âgé d’un à trois jours aurait connu une mort certaine s’il n’avait pas été secouru. Cette photographie a été réalisée une fois le cageot retiré après que le parcelle ait été fauchée.
