Garson s-a născut în Highland Park, New Jersey⁠(d), fiul lui Muriel (născută Schwartz) și al lui Donald M. Paszamant.[7] Garson era evreu.[8] În copilărie, a vizitat Tabăra Wekeela⁠(d) din Hartford, Maine⁠(d) timp de 11 ani.[9]

A absolvit în 1982 Liceul Highland Park⁠(d).[10] În 1985, a obținut o diplomă de licență în teatru de în Universitatea Wesleyan[10][11] și o diplomă de master în cadrul Yale Drama School⁠(d).[12][13]

Garson a murit de cancer pancreatic la casa sa din Los Angeles, California pe 21 septembrie 2021 la vârsta de 57 de ani.[27][28][29]
